Kitchen Paint Color Ideas Now Beyond White

Table of Contents

No, white kitchens are not going away in 2024 or any other year for that matter. It's not always interesting to follow trends but to encourage timeless choices. Timeless choices aren't limited to what most of us would call "neutral" or the white range. The reason I like to stay up-to-date on kitchen paint color trends is to note how cultural and societal evolution influences design elements. My background involves counseling psychology, so you have to look at what's beneath the surface. When everyone seems to want a green kitchen at any given time, one can speculate. Why would green resonate now?

Why does the above cuisine seem so innovative and yet traditional? So many thoughtful details. Let's start with this stunning custom accent cabinet painted a gorgeous blue.

Benjamin Moore HALE MARINE

A mirrored pantry or a dresser painted in this blue to contrast with all the white?

Yes please! So keep that idea aside even if you're sold on neutrals, as you consider different paint color options below. Perhaps one of these colours will appeal and can enhance a vintage cabinet, trolley or table to liven up your own kitchen.

Farrow & Ball N°89 LULWORTH BLUE

F&B consider this a cool mid-blue, and the name comes from the sea shadow in beautiful Lulworth Bay in Dorset.

“Typical of a formal Regency shade, Lulworth Blue pairs happily alongside the equally clean Wimborne White and Parma Grey. Despite its brightness, it can promote deep, peaceful sleep when used in dimly lit rooms, especially when used on both walls and woodwork. -Farrow and Ball

This is the color of a Dutch exterior door:

Benjamin Moore BROKEN LIGHT

We tend to think of neutrals like this as safe, soft, and not too punchy.

But look at the energy a Light Breeze can bring:

Don't let platitudes guide your design decisions and color selections. Very often, you just need to sample colors and note your emotional reaction before making the final decision.

Benjamin Moore BLUE MARGUERITE 2062-40

It’s easy to be annoyed/surprised when you watch a home renovation show on TV and the client responds to the “reveal” or finished design by saying, “I love how everything comes together.” The problem is, the goal isn’t to have everything match or even follow a formula for getting colors and textures right. Sometimes, it’s the clashes that create a magical design moment. Here’s an example of a cheerful blue meeting sophisticated tone-on-tone wallpaper and warm brass hardware:

This intriguing medium blue subtly shaded with gray and green tones has an LRV (Light Reflectance Value) of 25.59…which means it will reflect approximately 25 % of light.

Farrow & Ball ARSENIC

When you hear “green cooking,” what comes to mind? Do you picture emerald, sage, seafoam, teal, or olive? And… wait for it… ARSENIC?

What if your vision for your kitchen was to paint the floor a bright green like this?

Wow! It's so unique and joyful...kind of like a fresh spring meadow underfoot.

Benjamin Moore LOUISBOURG GREEN HC-113

Here's a more confusing tone that might not immediately come to mind.

Benjamin Moore SAGE MOHEGAN 2138-30

Here's another idea for a hard-to-pin-down description of a deep, moody green when you're looking for a rich green.

It looks smoky, handsome and sophisticated, but it seems to be right at home in a country setting with paneling:

If you like your blues and greens muddy or gray-sh, here's another option you might like for a blue.

BM FRENCH TOILET

Blue-grays (or blues for that matter!) can be hard to come by, don't you think?

This is why it is recommended to limit your search to the range of gray paint samples. While there are many exceptions, the key is to try several samples for your unique lighting situation.

Benjamin Moore PHILIPSBURG BLUE

The way this particular blue creates a special mood in the design below is admirable.

It's an unusual but pleasant combination, both comfortable and cool.

The kitchen above is a reminder that color can calm a room and even inspire optimism… qualities that can be especially important if life gets chaotic. Here’s another idea for a calm kitchen with a color story beyond white:

COASTAL PLAIN Sherwin-Williams

There's a timeless quality to this green that strikes all the right chords in the kitchen below.

It could be that the kitchen gets a lot of light or it could be a photo editing issue. Just another reason to sample and note if the color is the right saturation for your own space.

Farrow & Ball RAILINGS

Black is still a less popular neutral for kitchens, but thanks to social media influencers, it's suddenly appearing everywhere.

Farrow & Ball PITCH NOIR

While it once seemed reserved for urban and industrial kitchen designs, black now seems versatile and can even strike a chord in the modern European countryside.

When black meets gold tones…SHAZAM!

It's very common to see kitchen islands painted black, and here's another design by Holly Williams where black is repeated:

Farrow & Ball LIGHT BLUE

Farrow & Ball’s Light Blue played a starring role in my favourite blue kitchen of 2017:

Farrow & Ball ELEPHANT'S BREATH

What if you were looking for one of those sophisticated, hard to describe, and rather complex neutral colors?

Elephants Breath looks very chic and Parisian:

Need a reliable paint color for white trim and doors with almost all of these color options?

Just a gorgeous white that looks timeless and clean.

Do you still see slogans that say gray interiors are a bygone fad? Grays are timeless and natural and can be the perfect backdrop for your rich and sophisticated kitchen.

Benjamin Moore NIGHT TRAIN 1567

There are some great paint color names, and then there's NIGHT TRAIN.

Benjamin Moore WAXED FABRIC

Wait until you see how this color interacts with terracotta.

Hope these inspiring photos and ideas for walls, floors and cabinets have given you some delicious food for thought.
