Painting the house white? What is the best white exterior paint color

Table of Contents

Use this guide as a guide for choosing colors to sample, not as a direct formula for achieving the perfect white for your unique project. The gorgeous stucco outdoor shower above with its impeccable architecture?

Sherwin-Williams Eider White

Let's start with the most recent white paint color that I have personally used (to paint bedroom furniture but also laundry room cabinets).

Eider White is a grayish white with a hint of pink/magenta.

And here it is on the walls of a kitchen:

Currently this room is a pleasant gray, which can feel dark at certain times of the day. Even if this white seems like exactly what you were looking for, be sure to taste at least a few others to be sure, because the sun will wash it out, and you'll want to see how it looks throughout the day in different light.

Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace

This crisp, clean white is so loved by designers and homeowners alike.

It's considered a classic Benjamin Moore color, and if you want a super reflective color, this might be it.

Chantilly Lace

It's considered a classic Benjamin Moore color, and if you want a super reflective color, this might be it.

Chantilly Lace OC-65 has a Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of 90.04. This means it reflects 90 % of light!

Chantilly lace can be a great choice if you pair it with black and want a high contrast look.

Sherwin-Williams Shoji White

Shoji White SW 7042 is a much creamier white than Chantilly Lace which borders on greige.

It is a popular color for exteriors and suits a range of architectural styles. Here is Shoji White on board and latte…

Is Sherwin-Williams Snowbound 7004 the best white exterior paint color?

With its slight gray undertone, this is a versatile cool white that pairs well with other gray-influenced colors. Does this remind you a bit of the Eider White color we started with above?

If you're looking for a natural color combination to coordinate with Snowbound, consider Colonnade Grey and Autumn Orchid. But Jogging Path isn't so bad either:

Benjamin Moore China White OC-141

This is an off-white with cool gray undertones and an LRV of 76.63.

China White is similar to Classic Grey (I love this one!) and is said to pair well with Collingwood, Vintage Vogue, and a white we considered earlier: Chantilly Lace.

If you are considering painting the door a subtle color, here is one possibility:

And do you like the combination with black for the window trims? Here is the color of the door that appears darker as a sample because once exposed to natural light, the perception of it changes.

Here is an English house where I am not sure of the exact paint white for the brick and green-grey for the door, but it is very close to Greyhound:

Sherwin Williams Alabaster 7008

Adjectives like comfortable, peaceful, balanced and gentle come up when you hear about Alabaster and why so many people are crazy about it.

SW Alabaster 7008

Its LRV (light reflectance) sits at a sweet spot: 82, and it's neutral enough that it'll be on any short list of whites to sample for an exterior.

WHITE Glidden

While the exact high-density paint used on this upcoming low country cottage may not be available, it's probably the closest alternative to Glidden, and the bonus is how easy it is to buy. It's right off the shelf!

Sherwin-Williams REST GRAY

If you are looking for an atmospheric gray with a bit of warmth, you might consider Sherwin-Williams Repose Gray even though it is not a white. Why? As an exterior color, it will be washed out and warm and might be the look you are going for. Here it is on a traditional exterior:

Sherwin-Williams EXTRA WHITE

Here's another SW Extra White home with a gray accent color to consider:

The shutter color is Benjamin Moore 1479.

SW 7006 is considered an EXPERT PICK by Sherwin-Williams. They say this: “For a clean, crisp look, this white does the trick. Its high light reflectivity makes it an ideal choice for woodwork and ceilings. How much do you think?

NUANCER

Isn't the name of this beautiful white color magnificent (and doesn't seeing the planters inspire you to do the same if you have a garage or shed with windows?).

MODERN WHITE

One of the reasons we've seen a rise in cool, bright whites for interiors and exteriors that began about a decade ago is the interest in a modern vintage look or a refreshed traditional style.

When an old house is given a modern color, tension and something new is created. We don't always recognize such tension, but it is there.

Sherwin-Williams Dover White

This is definitely a less formal look and popular with country and modern farmhouse design fans.

Benjamin Moore BALBOA MIST

Every time a picture of a house with this exterior paint color is seen, it seems to go viral, so it's certain that this color resonates with many discerning eyes!

It's a reliable exterior color that I discovered when my friend Sherry Hart began choosing it for a number of high-end projects in Atlanta's Buckhead neighborhood.

You can see how well this works on brick and with lush green landscapes as well as warm gray trim colors.

Benjamin Moore White OC-151

Could this be my favorite fresh, clean, bright white of all time? Maybe. I love it so much that I painted all the interiors of our old house Benjamin Moore OC-151.

It definitely has cool blue-gray undertones, but it can work wonderfully with yellow-y natural sunlight.

Any final tips on the stress of choosing the perfect paint color for your project? Approach research with curiosity rather than feverish anxiety. This applies to much of the life journey in general. There is so much mystery, so much uncertainty. But learning to become more resilient involves a willingness to be awed, humble, and ready to experience wonder.
