What colors of white paint for kitchen cabinets and walls?

Table of Contents

If you find "the look" you're looking for here, that's great! PIN these ideas. But keep in mind that the perfect color may require sampling at least 3 different paint colors in your unique space to find the closest match. You don't always notice the nuances of a white color just by looking at a sample or photo.

It's when you see different whites side by side that you begin to perceive subtle differences in temperature and undertone. Since painting cabinets is more complex and labor-intensive than painting walls, all the detective work, pinning, testing and sampling will be worth it.

Benjamin Moore LIGHT OAK OC-20

It's such a versatile color for cabinets or walls if you tend to like putty, white oak, mushroom, limestone, and warm greige beige tones.

With its warm gray undertones, this versatile neutral evokes the quiet majesty of white oak and has a light reflectance value (LRV) of 68.64. Not too light and still reflects a lot of light into space.

What a bonus to see this color in a white oak kitchen to see the relationship to that wood species and also to the warm finishes of the antique brass hardware. Warm grays, this versatile neutral evokes the quiet majesty of white oak and has a light reflectance value (LRV) of 68.64. Not too light and still reflects plenty of light into the space.

Here is the color of the cabinets in another project with glossy white subway tiles for the backsplash.

Pale oak is also a nice neutral for walls with off-white or cool white cabinets.

Benjamin Moore WHITE SAND

I loved the white oak hardwoods we installed throughout this house and used BM Dove Wing on all the doors and trim.

White Sand is a muted, relaxed creamy beige that looks appealing in both traditional and modern spaces with an LRV of 66.95. It's just a little darker than Pale Oak.

The cabinets had a custom finish that was a creamy antique white (but not yellow at all). Believe it or not, pictures of my 2007 kitchen are now trending on Pinterest…17 years later. Crazy and proof that trends are trends…timeless just happens to be trendy.

If you like Belgian linen like me, you will probably like White Sand.

The dining cabinet is painted in BM White Dove, which helps you notice the contrast with White Sand. And if it's just a little too dark for you, BM Ballet White can be perfect.

GREEK VILLA Sherwin-Williams 7551

If you're looking for a more muted white than Pale Oak and White Sand, you might want to take a look at Greek Villa.

This is a sunny white that comes to life in natural light. Sherwin Williams says to use it to brighten up any space or on trim to make other colors pop.

Since the LRV is 84, it will reflect a lot of light if your space is on the darker side.

Don't you love the idea of using it for Old World European-influenced interiors where you want the walls to evoke an old creamy plaster?

Because the right paint color can truly change the mood, character and even age of a room. There aren't many other design elements that are more affective AND effective at a relatively low price!

Sherwin-Williams MARSHMALLOW 7001

Looking for a crisp white that will invite you into a soft embrace? Oh la la. Marshmallow with its slight pink undertone might just be the mood. (SW describes its mood as a warm hug.) Below, you can see it on the kitchen walls contrasting softly with the cool white trim.

For an earthy pairing with Marshmallow, try a dark, warm neutral like Foothills, and in the kitchen above, Oyster White was chosen for the cabinets.

I love the vibe of Marshmallow, and it's pretty close to one of my favorite paint colors right now... Sherwin Williams Eider White

It may sound like a broken record now, but I'm telling you, the drop of magenta/pink in the formula works magic on this muted greige. Here's Marshmallow on a beautiful exterior:

If you're afraid of the pink or purple undertones in some whites, you might be more likely to prefer Snowbound.

Sherwin-Williams SNOWBOUND 7004

Like many of the best neutral paint colors, you can't pair Snowbound with a cool white or even a grayish white. The lighting conditions in your room will influence how you perceive it.

With its slight gray undertone, this versatile cool white pairs well with other gray-influenced colors. Like entering a snowy clearing.

Don't forget to check out white paint colors without "white" in their name! Light gray colors are often the right white.

Should I paint the kitchen walls the same white color as the cabinets? Many people keep it uniform, but you'll use a different sheen for each.

Satin or semi-gloss for woodwork and flat or eggshell for walls. Cabinets are often painted with enamel and other specialty formulas that will stand up to use.

Sherwin-Williams SHOJI WHITE SW 7042

When you want a light but comfortable color for cabinets, walls, woodwork or doors.

The reason why these paint colors on the walls of the rooms beyond the kitchen are shown to you is that it helps to see the same color in different contexts. On the cabinets in this kitchen you can see the contrast of Shoji White with the white ceiling and backsplash:

In the context of this room you can see it with cool grays in a bath of natural light:

And suddenly that warm white looks bright and washed out against a sunken exterior.

While there are no rules, for outdoors it is often helpful to stick to a white that has an LRV (i.e. the percentage of reflected light) of less than 80. Sometimes a white that is too bright will appear less than welcoming in terms of curb appeal.

Benjamin Moore SIMPLY WHITE OC-117

If you're not sure where to start with your paint sampling, Simply White is one of those designer favorites you can start with.

Simply White has worked on so many interiors, exteriors and projects that the name says it all!

Just the slightest hint of warmth makes this pure, crisp white a favorite to use anywhere in the home.

BM Simply White and shiplap seem to go together like snow on a white picket fence, and you'll find plenty more examples at Pinterest here. Need an idea for a high contrast neutral to use with?

The Fox Group loves Simply White and much of their work includes architectural details such as paneled walls.

It's unimaginable to be tasked with choosing the perfect white for an area like this...so much work to change it!

Benjamin Moore WHITE OC-151

So many warm and creamy whites shared in this post that it would be best to add a fresh one into the mix in case you want to try one. This was the tried and true white in our modern rustic cottage that we renovated from top to bottom:

After tasting too many whites to mention with varying undertones, this very fresh, clean, grayed, gallery-like white instantly modernized dated rooms.

The walls were painted with a matte finish and semi-gloss was used on the woodwork.
