3 Timeless White Paints: Why Do Designers Love Them?

Table of Contents

We all need a starting point when deciding to paint the walls, trim, ceilings and doors of a room white. Even though we realize that we need to taste several whites first (since each piece has its own exposure and issues), the challenge remains knowing WHICH WHITES. Neutrals are great for work and life, but the best part?

3 Timeless White Paints Designers Love and Trust

If you enjoy choosing colors while standing under fluorescents in dimly lit stores browsing through hundreds of paint swatches, go for it. But this method is frustrating and unsuccessful. So it's worth taking a look at galleries of a few trusted white paint colors that designers tend to favor... at least it provides a starting point!

Sample at least three options that you think are possible. You can order peel and stick samples online or pick up sample pots at your convenience.

The timeless white paints mentioned here are popular for good reason. First, they work for many designers, painters and DIY enthusiasts in a variety of settings.

Second, they work if you need a white for walls, ceilings, trim, doors, windows, cabinets or furniture.

With a light reflectance value (LRV) of 89.52, Simply White is super bright and reflective…the brightest white of these three whites we deconstruct here.

With plenty of natural light (above) you can see how bright it is. Although we can't see an extent of it on the walls of this neighboring kitchen, if you look in the upper right corner where the walls are painted Simply White, you can see the contrast with Swiss Coffee.

Here's an example of Simply White on the walls, ceiling, and shiplap trim (at least the trim appears to be the same tone).

Simply White is bright with high contrast blacks and warm browns and seems particularly popular with the construction site sign crowd.

Should you simply paint your exterior white?

It depends. Some designers recommend sticking to whites with an LRV below 80. The light reflectance of this color is close to 90, so it's pretty much done. It may depend on where the house is located, as in some very dark environments this rule may not apply.

Notice how white looks slightly different at different times of day, in reflections, and in different lighting conditions.

Sherwin-Williams PURE WHITE 7005

If you are curious about the best-selling white paint in Sherwin Williams , they say it's this one!

It's interesting that it looks much grayer than Simply White. The Simply White swatch looks downright creamy compared to the Pure White swatch above.

This is why it is so helpful to taste whites side by side and also to see photos of the colors in real rooms.

The fact that it has cooler undertones than Simply White might make it a better choice for more modern interiors.

That said, this versatile, bright white has just the slightest yellow undertone that keeps it from looking too stark.

Perhaps this is why it is such a popular finishing option.

Benjamin Moore WHITE DOVE OC-17

You've probably seen this paint color name pop up frequently online and by word of mouth.

According to the Benjamin Moore brand , White Dove's unfailing style defines this clean, classic white.

The LRV at 83.16 is almost identical to the already mentioned Pure White as it sits at the sweet spot for light reflectance. (The amount of light reflection in space is 83.16 %.)

This looks beautiful in a timeless dining room with shiplap above as well as on the cabinets below:

Is White Dove better in vintage or modern interiors?

It looks equally lovely in more modern settings like the one above where it joins the blush pink.

White Dove can look great on kitchen cabinets and pairs well with almost any white marble, quartz or solid surface countertop.

People who don't have much experience with white walls often worry about how cold a room will feel.

Although furniture and accessories are factors, White Dove exudes warmth without looking yellow on you.
